Facility Update:

We’ve been busy over the winter landscaping, residing the shed, purchasing picnic tables and updating the playground. We are constantly assessing the facility and managing the upkeep accordingly.

Over the past three years we have enjoyed partnering with Howard County through the Grant process that is specifically designated for the revitalization of the neighborhood pools. We were fortunately selected as recipients in 2013 and 2014. We applied for the 2015 grant available through Howard County Recreation and Parks and are waiting to hear back from them.

We have participated in the Stream ReLeaf Program as well as the BGE free tree program. We’ve had Donald Tsusaki, with the READY/Chesapeake Alliance Program, and his team, install two rain gardens in 2013. In fall 2014 we installed water absorbing trees and shrubs to help with this problem. We are currently working with Donald on modifying and adding more foliage to the rain gardens to provide better drainage and install additional rain gardens where needed. Donald plans to contact John Slater, with Howard County, to potentially scope the pipe running east/west under the property so we can properly address the problem. This is a continuation from a subsequent Grant. By utilizing many of Howard County’s available resources, we are actively working on a solution to effectively solve our wet problem in the lower area of the facility. In the past three years we have hosted Howard County Recreation and Parks, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, Master Gardeners, Howard County Conservancy and the ARM Group, Inc. to assess the multi-faceted problem. The water issues are derived from the surrounding properties, a pipe that runs east/west under the property and the drainage into the NSJ property. We have a natural spring on our property and we have streams surrounding the property. Please know that we are still actively working towards a budget friendly and reasonable solution that makes sense for the geographic landscape of the NSJ property.

The NSJ Board of Directors started an initiative four years ago to build and retain a wait list. We’ve partnered with Howard County to promote our club through the Recreation & Parks website. We also started advertising through Howard Magazine in conjunction with our pool management company, Continental Pools Inc. The advertising has given us a continuous presence in the community and has increased our visibility to those families moving to Howard County. We have seen our wait list increase from the advertising and the inclusion of the neighborhood pools on the Howard County website.

The Blue Marlin Grill will now be operated by Jill Brookhart, the owner of T-Bonz. We are currently collaborating on the hours of operation and a menu. Once all is finalized we will send out the information so you can plan your meals accordingly.

Remember we have the Vocelli’s Red Phone, located in the Blue Marlin Grill Pavilion. Vocelli’s has been a strong supporter of NSJ and our events; they donate back to NSJ a percentage earned from using the Red Phone.
